About Ginnoruwa Social Forum

GSF is a community collective, founded in November 2018 by Dr. Upul Wickramasinghe during his doctoral fieldwork, with the support of villagers and several external supporters. Its main goal is to work on matters pertaining to the village community such as issues around water, farming, children’s education, women’s issues and other cultural affairs.
Since 2019, GSF has installed rainwater-harvesting units in 25 households addressing the drinking water issue successfully. Each rainwater-harvesting unit costed around 100,000 LKR (2.5 million in total) and the initiative was supported by Soup Kitchen Sri Lanka - a local, Muslim women-led group consists of Muslim women who work to bring together philanthropists and eager enthusiasts in charitable causes that bon varied communities within the country. GSF has built a reputation as a community-driven organization that has positively contributed to enhance villagers’ living conditions in both social and material terms. Consequently, it has received both financial and material supports from well-wishers to implement several programs including the Australia awards small grant, rainwater tank project, scholarship program and a community kitchen for children, film screening programs, English language camps, and the donation of a piano and school materials.
